Daughter2 strikes a pose. Cape Spear lighthouse in the background.
View towards St. John's harbour entrance from Cape Spear. You can see the speck of the Signal Hill tower on Signal Hill, which is about 2/3 of the way across from the left.
Enjoying the spectacular view.
It was such an amazing day. Cool breeze. Warm sun.
This is the Queen's Battery at Signal Hill. That is Cape Spear in the distance. Pretty hard for an enemy ship to sneak into the harbour in one piece. There are several historic WW2 military sites in Newfoundland, since it was at the front line of any potential North American invasion by sea. We were told that a cable was strung across the harbour entrance at night to block U-boats from entering.
The kids.
We were glad to be here. This is such a beautiful, significant, historic and presently-important city.

Feeling the power within.
An excellent, well-executed demonstration of British military exercises and drills at Signal Hill. St. John's was a key British colonial capital in the 18th century, and the local regiment would have been the best of the best. The actors, made up of local students, mingled with the audience afterward and answered questions.
